How will the media cover Permatang Pauh?

All eyes obviously are now on Permatang Pauh, the place where de facto leader of PKR, Anwar Ibrahim, is scheduled to contest in a forthcoming by-election.

This is because the stakes are high in this expected stiff contest, the outcome of which may well chart a new course for SS Malaysia Enterprise.

All eyes would also be focused on the entire media machinery that is expected to descend upon this little place to report the goings-on for the benefit of those who are not there and those who live elsewhere in the world.

Interested and concerned Malaysians (including, possibly, the likes of former special adviser to the United Nations secretary-general on ethics, Tunku Abdul Aziz) would also observe the country’s mainstream media to see whether they would perform professionally, report in a fair and balanced manner things that are associated with the by-election, the candidates and the issues raised during the election campaign.

And no less important is to see whether the media would adhere to the principle of the right of reply for the affected parties.

It is in this larger context that Information Minister Shabery Cheek’s ‘assurance’ of fair and professional reporting of the by-election on the part of RTM and other mainstream media should be seen. This ‘assurance’ was reported by Bernama.

While this ‘ministerial pledge’ can be perceived as something that we should welcome, it however can constitute a governmental interference into the daily affairs of news management of media organisations, especially when we are reminded of what the minister had said not too long ago about the government not meddling in news selection. It was reported by Bernama here, an extract of which is published below:

Govt Never Meddle In News Selection – Shabery

Information Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek said the government has never meddled in the selection of news items by the media including those by Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM).

He said the media was free to decide on the priority and never directed for certain news to be carried or which should be dropped.

“We want the media to think what is news value. I have never directed on what news to be given priority or not and leave it to RTM and the other media to find decide on the priority,” he said after presenting prizes at the international Mandarin debating competition here tonight.

Surely the supposedly independent media organisations do not need to wait for a ministerial ‘cue’, much less directive, before carrying out their proper role as credible and responsible media outfit.

The bodek MSM will go all out to spin negative reports on PKRM’s campaign and praise the BN sky high. The people can judge for themselves by accessing the internet.

It’s unbelievable that the government does not decide what to broadcast and televise on its own electronic media. It’s just typical of the BN government to say opposite of the obvious. Even when the whole world and its own rakyat know the truth the government goes to interpret the truth for political reasons. Does it also mean the DG and his team at the information ministry is 100% apolitical and non-partisan? Who is kidding whom?
The credibility of the information ministry shall be seen in the event of the by-election of Permatang Pauh.

EVEN BEFORE THE BY-ELECTION HAS BEGUN , WE IN THE UK THINK THAT THE BN WILL DEFINITELY LOSE THE BY-ELECTION.
    THE MAIN REASONS ARE :-
1] THE BN GOVT IS not FOCUSSING ON THE ECONOMIC PROBLEMS OF THE COUNTRY
2] SPENDING TOO MUCH TIME ON THE SODOMY ISSUES RATHER THAN MORE PRESSING ISSUES.
3] NO NEW GOOD POLICIES BEING IMPLEMENTED BUT TAKING AWAY PROMISED PROJECTS WHICH HAVE BEEN APPROVED FOR INSTANCE IN PENANG.
4] WASTING FINANCIAL RESOURCES IN THE PDRM DEPARTMENT TO INVESTIGATE AND SPENDING LAVISH AMOUNTS FOR THAT SAIFUL CASE.
5] EVEN IN THE MONGOLIAN MURDER CASE JUSTICE CANNOT BE METED OUT TO THE ACCUSED NAJIBS & FAMILY..

THE BN ARE BAD LOSERS IN THE COMING BY-ELECTION.

ALL PEACE-LOVING MALAYSIANS must VOTE FOR DSAI EVEN IN VERY LARGE NUMBERS TO SHOW THE BN GOVT THAT THE RAKYAT ARE FRUSTRATED WITH THE CORRUPTED BN POLICIES AND THEY NEED TO LEAVE THE GOVT.

ONCE THE BY-ELECTION RESULTS ARE OUT IE PKR WINNING HANDSOMELY, THEN THE BN DEFECTIONS MUST FOLLOW VERY VERY QUICKLY TO THE OPPOSITION .
THIS WILL INEVITABLY LEAD TO a new dawn for all Malaysians

MY SINCERE WISH IS FOR DSAI TO TAKE OVER AND SAVE THE COUNTRY FROM DECAYING UNDER THE CORRUPT BN RULE.

MERDEKA MERDEKA FOR MALAYSIA – TRULY INDEPENDENT FROM THE BN RULE

GOD BLESS MALAYSIA AND ITS PEOPLE.

BY THE WAY I AM A MALAYSIAN AND HAVE BEEN FOLLOWING THE POLITICAL CHANGE IN THE LAST ONE YEAR OF THE EVENTS TAKING PLACE IN MALAYSIA.

    WE NEED A COMPLETE CHANGE

GOOD LUCK – MAKKAQL SAKTHI TO PKR

No matter what, the MSM will never change their stripes. Whatever Ahmad Shabeery Cheek says, the proof of the taste is in eating it, we shall see.

Already, the same thing exists, wheres the coverage of DSAi’s ceramahs??? Such as the one in Seberang Perai that attracted 15000 people!!!!!

I doubt we will hear much about the by-election. It will be found somewhere obscure on the inside pages – by those that still buy the msm.

And it won’t make front-page news unless AI loses, or wins by a smaller majority.

But that’s our msm lah, I don’t expect any more, and maybe we’ll get even less!

WHY BN LOST PERMATANG PAU DUE TO UMNO BN STUPIDITY AND ERRORS

After 51 years of independence, Umno’s policies are still not up to today’s standards. It’s just a race-based party that only cares for one race. God is watching everything you do. He will put a stop to it one day. Your days are numbered – the cries of the people will be heard. God created everything equal, but you stole it all for yourself.

In what condition would you like the Indians and Chinese to vote for BN? Under threat? Anwar has won and will bring good policies to suit Malaysians.Yesterday’s by-election in Permatang Pauh (PP) will also be hailed as a Good-Bye Election! We hope Permatang Pauh will shout for the rest of Malaysia good-bye to

    – racial policies and racist politics

    – to the Malaysian hybrid of apartheid

    – to unbridled greed and wanton corruption

    – to a sullied judiciary and police force

    – judiciary under the Executive – there is no Judicial Independence

    – to a one party system domination where scoundrels lurk and find refuge And say hello to a New Malaysia! Didn’t I say this is a good bye-election ?

Anwar has won Permatang Pauh with a thumping majority of more than 15,000 despite the overwhelming odds stacked against him by the BN machinery and polling held on a working day.

This is a convincing victory which declares that all the races, Malays included, endorse PR’s multi-racial politics to BN’s divisive racial politics.

If the BN government has any sense, it should heed the voice of the people and set about correcting its ways. But I fear that this message from the people will once again be ignored and Umno will continue to play on racial and religious sentiments.

The speaker of Parliament has already stated there is no urgency to swear in Anwar as an MP which is a dishonourable act to frustrate the will of the people.

As the BN government cannot or will not change, there is no choice but to continue the march to Putrajaya. The huge support given to Anwar during nomination day and throughout the campaigning period shows clearly the popularity enjoyed by Anwar.

The people have spoken. It is now up to all conscientious MPs from BN to jump TO JOIN ANWAR IN PAKATAN RAKYAT AND SAVE MALAYSIA

    SAVE MALAYSIA FROM UMNO
