“Big Spender” is a song written by Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields for the musical Sweet Charity. It was popularised by Shirley Bassey whose rendition hit no. 21 in the UK Singles Chart in December 1967.
The flamboyant character referred to in this song is fictitious. Any resemblance to real persons, living or dead, particularly in cosmopolitan cities such as New York, Paris, Sydney or other urban shopping paradises is purely coincidental. An equally old number below, “You’re so vain”, merely reinforces this disclaimer.
