Bernama reported that Bollywood leading actor Shah Rukh Khan will receive a datukship from the Melaka Yang Dipertua Negeri, in conjunction with his 70th birthday on Saturday.
There are many things in our society, especially of late, that befuddle me, but this datuk conferment on a Bollywood actor, in my humble opinion, takes the cake.
I am still grappling with the notion of a foreign actor and national being considered for an award. And I do realise that to question such a conferment may incur the wrath of Mr Khan’s fan base in Malaysia, particularly the powers-that-be in Melaka.
That notwithstanding, I wonder whether it could be that Shah Rukh Khan has become such a towering figure to our local ruling politicians because he has provided, to use today’s popular parlance, the benchmark for ‘very good acting’, let alone dancing to the tune of the day.

i am not a big fan of shah rukh khan nor do i have anything against him…but doesnt it seem ridiculous? what has he contributed to malaysia or malacca? I am still bitter of the fact that some people get recognised for meagre or no achievement…does anyone know what happen to the guy who climbed mount everest? what did they get for their sacrifice to put the country on top of the world…owh wait, maybe because they were not ‘true Malaysians’? You have to be more generous than the emails appear to be. The Malaysian govt is obviously thinking beyond narrow confines to what gives pleasure to the people of Malaysia and of excellence itself. SRK is a very good friend of Malaysia and also brings good business there by doing his films in Malaysia. His Don gave the ordinary people of many countries a look at wonderful progress made by Malaysia. So whats the anger?
SRK is a huge personality recognized on the world stage- The British recognize foreigners who are achievers and distinguished so why not Datuk King Khan?

Maybe the powers that be did a high profile dna research at the expense of taxpayer’s money and found that SHAHrukh inherited the genes from Iskandar SHAH of Melaka? But if Sassui Kazi is right then the remake of ‘Don’ in tamil, also shot in Malaysia, then Ajit Kumar should also get a ‘Datuk’ for his ‘Billa’.

Going by your argument, then the tamil movie heroes from south india should deserve the datukship more than SRK. Do you know there are more tamil movies shot in malaysia in all the major locations in malaysia. Previously they used to go to singapore and thailand but malaysia is their main location now. Remember tamil movies from india also have a global audience.
The point is, if the govt wants to show their gratitude to those actors, they can do so by other means like cutting red tapes, giving hotel concessions and so forth, not datukship. Datukship should be only conferred on those outstanding persons who have contributed to the nation in a positive way. I would go one step further and say that on the contrary SRK and the likes had in fact had negative impact on the local girls esp the malay girls which led them to be associated with bangla workers due to their somewhat bollywood actors like features and find themselves to be cheated by these guys.
True, courageous Malaysians like the Everest climbers were ignored but a foreigner who swings around from tree to tree is conferred such an honorouble title. What is becoming of our nation lar?

My guess is that these people think that conferring a Datukship to this popular Hindi actor will bring the Indians back to supporting BN.

Apabila Mohd.Ali Rustam mengumumkan hendak bertanding jawatan Timbalan Presiden UMNO, Mahathir menggelarnya sebagai Pak Lawak. Sekarang entah atas alasan apa, kerajaan Melaka yang dipimpin oleh Ali Rustam hendak memberikan gelaran Datuk pula kepada Shah Rukh Khan. Ini memang tindakan yang sukar dimengerti dan boleh dipersoalkan. Apakah gelaran Pak Lawak ini tepat pada tempatnya!
