Why more heat is on Ahmad Ismail

Bukit Bendera UMNO chief Ahmad Ismail once again saw himself in the spotlight for the wrong reason. MCA vice-president Datuk Dr Fong Chan Onn is the latest personality who came forward to lambast Ahmad and called for him to be charged with sedition.

Ahmad had allegedly called the Chinese ’squatters’ and said that ‘as the Chinese were only immigrants it was impossible to achieve equal rights amongst races’ during a by-election ceramah in Permatang Pauh on Aug 25.

BN component partner MCA, apart from the entire Chinese community, didn’t think that was a nice thing to say. Which explains why the Chinese community and the Chinese press are abuzz with this controversy since Ahmad uttered the unspeakable.

Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi responded by saying that said he would tell Ahmad not to repeat such remarks and that he (Abdullah) thought Ahmad didn’t mean what he said.

This premier remark apparently didn’t go down well with component parties MCA and Gerakan. In fact, they had called for a stronger action against Ahmad.

In the wake of the ‘Merdeka celebration’ that had an overarching theme of unity, one wonders at this juncture what would the reaction of particularly other leaders in UMNO, and generally other political parties and leaders of other communities be in relation to this hot issue.

Anti-graft agency gets cracking?

According to Bernama, more is yet to come, the anti-graft fight mounted by the Anti-Corruption Agency in the country.

The news agency says that the recent arrests related to corruption charges are a ’sneak preview’ of the shape of things to come when the supposedly more independent Malaysian Commission Against Corruption materialises on Jan. 1 next year.

Does this mean that people in high places, including top politicians, would be treated by this Commission the same as the ‘ikan bilis’ (small fries) of the nefarious world?

Weary Malaysians will wait with bated breath.

Below is an extract of the report filed by Azman Ujang, presumably Bernama’s former general manager:

Flurry Of Arrests Raises Hopes On Anti-graft Fight

By Azman Ujang

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 1 (Bernama) — As you are reading this article, the Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA) could well be arresting more people in its stepped-up crackdown that has seen some major results lately.

The flurry of arrests since July could be a “sneak preview” of what the long-awaited Malaysian Commission Against Corruption, due to come into being on Jan 1 next year, would be like.

The new-look body, which will be much more independent than the present one, means that the reform of the ACA initiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi will become a reality.

Ahead of this, the ACA has been showing in recent weeks that it really means business.

Among the big guns who have been charged for alleged corruption are former Immigration Department director-general Datuk Wahid Md Don and Tourism director-general Datuk Mirza Mohamad Taiyab.

Hardly five months after the new Perak state government was elected into office, two of its executive councillors, Mohd Osman Mohd Jailu and Jamaluddin Mohd Radzi, were arrested and charged last week.

Then came the arrests of scores of employees and runners of the Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre, Puspakom.
